The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a list of 32 universities that have been identified as fake universities across the country. UGC, a statutory body under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, has warned students and parents to stay away from these universities and the Commission has clarified that degrees issued by these varsities will be deemed as invalid for employment and higher education.
Interestingly, Delhi has the highest number of fake universities (12) in the list issued in 2026, followed by Uttar Pradesh (4). This was followed by Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, and West Bengal where there were two fake universities each. Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan also had one fake university each.
The Commission stated that these institutions do not hold recognition from either the Central Government or any State Government. Citing Sections 2(f) and 3 of the UGC Act, the notice emphasised that degrees issued by these entities have no legal validity.
