In 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman teamed up with former Apple designer Jony Ive to build AI-based hardware. Now, a new report has revealed that the company behind the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT is planning to enter the hardware market with its first smart speaker. The upcoming smart speaker will not be a regular voice assistant device. It is expected to come with a built-in camera and advanced facial recognition technology.
This means the device could identify people, recognise objects kept nearby and even understand conversations happening around it. The company may price theChatGPT smart speakerbetween $200 and $300 (roughly Rs 18,000 to Rs 27,000), The Information reported.
However, the launch is still some time away. The smart speaker is unlikely to arrive before March 2027. So right now, the project appears to be in development stage.
The goal is to make interactions more natural and intelligent using AI.
OpenAI’s hardware push gained momentum after it acquired legendary designer Jony Ive’s design company last year in a deal reportedly worth around $6.5 billion. Ive is best known for designing iconic Apple products like the iPhone. With his team on board, the ChatGPT maker is expected to focus on premium design and user-friendly experience.
Interestingly, the smart speaker may not be the only device in the pipeline. Reports suggest that OpenAI is also exploring smart glasses and even a smart lamp. Some prototypes for the lamp are already said to exist, but it is not clear if they will be released. These products may not reach mass production until 2028.
The AI device market is becoming more competitive. Companies like Apple are also reportedly working on AI-powered gadgets, including smart glasses and camera-equipped wearables.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the Cupertino-based tech giant is developing smart glasses, a camera-equipped pendant, and upgraded AirPods with advanced artificial intelligence features. These devices aim to reshape how users interact with Siri and everyday surroundings.
