The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team is heading to the round of 16 after a dramatic 2–0 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is their first knockout round victory since 2002. Folarin Balogun opened the scoring before being sent off with a red card. Despite the disadvantage, Malik Tillman sealed the victory with a free kick in the 82nd minute. Team USA will now face Belgium in Seattle on July 6th for a place in the World Cup quarterfinals.
New York City is preparing for one of its busiest Fourth of July weekends in years under dangerous heat and heightened security. The challenges come as a major heat wave expands across much of the country. Thousands are expected to converge on the city for the nation's 250th anniversary, the 50th anniversary of the Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks, and a big World Cup match between Brazil and Norway.
Mediators from Qatar and Pakistan say separate meetings with U.S. and Iranian negotiators have delivered positive progress. The discussions are set to continue after funeral observances for Iran’s former leader. Under the interim peace deal, the parties agreed on steps to reduce hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and advance future technical discussions on Iran’s nuclear program. The talks build on a ceasefire earlier this year and follow the Lake Lucerne Summit held in Switzerland in June.
