Gov. Gavin Newsom got trolled after celebrating the Supreme Courtstriking down President Donald Trump’s tariffs— with critics saying he should “sit this one out.”
Newsom gloated Friday that the “tariffs were nothing more than an illegal cash grab that drove up prices, hurt working families, and wrecked longstanding global alliances,” he wrote on X.
The Supreme Court struck downTrump’s sweeping tariffsin a Friday decision, saying the president exceeded his authority by using emergency powers to impose harsh levies on key trading partners like China and Mexico.
“Time to pay the piper, Donald,” Newsom added.“Every dollar your administration unlawfully took needs to be immediately refunded — with interest.”
The tough talk didn’t sit well with Newsom’s detractors, who ridiculed him for his state’s high taxes and government spending.

Frequent Newsom critic Kevin Dalton, who previously ran for the LA County Board of Supervisors, blasted the governor for failing to repay a $20 billion federal loan for Covid unemployment costs — leaving small businesses on the hook for repayments.“If Newsom were smart, he would shut his mouth and pay his debt. Unfortunately for Californians, he is not smart,” Dalton wrote on X.
“Governor Newsom, before demanding federal refunds, consider refunding CA taxpayers for thehigh-speed rail boondoggle—billions wasted with no trains running—and the billions spent on services for illegal alien,” another critic raged.
A third called Newsom out over legendary director Steven Spielbergdeciding to leave the state: “Please sit this one out.”
The blowback comes a day after Newsom signed legislation authorizing a $590 million loan to help prop up San Francisco’s ailing transit system.
