MILAN — A South Korean national flag was displayed incorrectly during the medal ceremony for the women's 3,000-meter relay at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics earlier this week.

The Taegeuk symbol in the center of the national flag, known as the Taegeukgi, was tilted counterclockwise during the ceremony held Thursday (Korean time) at the Milano Ice Skating Arena when the South Korean team snatched the gold medal.

The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) said it has requested a correction from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

"We provide the organizing committee with the official government-approved Taegeukgi design file and the national anthem audio for every Olympic Games," the KSOC said in a statement.

The IOC and the organizing committee apologized for the error and promised to take immediate corrective action, it said.
