A simple post on X from a US-based AI CEO has reignited a question many Indians have asked for years — is Bata actually an Indian brand? Sara Hooker, who was in New Delhi for the AI Impact Summit, shared a photo of a Bata store on X and wrote, “I grew up with Bata shoes in Eswatini and in Mozambique. Had no idea it was such a universal brand.”
Her post struck a chord with Indians. One user replied, “We grew up with Bata shoes — all my school shoes were Bata.” Hooker responded, “All my school shoes were bata.”
Another user commented, “Sara, 99.99% of people in India would not know Bata is NOT an Indian brand.” That statement captures a common belief.
So, is Bata Indian? The short answer is no.
Bata’s origins go back to 1894 in Zlín, then part of Austria-Hungary, now in the Czech Republic. It was founded by siblings Tomáš Baťa, Antonín Baťa and Anna Baťová, who came from a long line of shoemakers. Tomáš Baťa, the driving force behind the company, pioneered large-scale, assembly-line style shoe production in Europe. His model focused on affordable, durable footwear for ordinary people, which helped the company expand rapidly across Europe.
By the early 20th century, Bata was already an international brand with factories and retail outlets across multiple countries. After Tomáš Baťa’s death in 1932, the company continued expanding under family leadership.
Today, Bata operates more than 6,000 retail stores and works with around one lakh independent dealers and franchisees worldwide. The brand runs 27 production facilities in 20 countries, operates in over 90 countries and employs more than 40,000 people.
In India, Bata’s presence dates back to 1931, when it was incorporated as Bata Shoe Company Private Limited. Operations began in Konnagar near Calcutta in 1932. By 1934, the foundation stone was laid for what became Batanagar - a dedicated industrial township that later emerged as a major manufacturing hub. It was the first footwear manufacturing facility in India to receive ISO 9001 certification.
The company went public in 1973 and was renamed Bata India Limited. Today, Bata India operates over 1,375 stores across metros, mini-metros and towns, along with a large wholesale distribution network reaching more than 30,000 dealers, as per its website.
That long presence, close to a century now, is why generations of Indians see Bata as a “desi” brand. But officially, it is a multinational company with Czech origins.
