Following his hat-trick of ducks in the current T20World Cup, Abhishek Sharma's recent performance has drawn criticism. The left-handed opener, who was formerly seen as one ofIndia's primary offensive options at the top of the order, has had difficulty getting going. His aggressive approach to score runs fast has often backfired, as evidenced by the three straight innings in which he was dismissed without soring a single run, casting doubt on his tournament strategy.
Ahead of the Super 8 game against South Africa, Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel revealed that there are no discussions around Abhishek Sharma and he will surely deliver in the upcoming matches. The former Proteas pacer also said the the southpaw has been working hard in the nets and will come good going ahead in the mega tournament.
"No discussions about Abhishek Sharma. We're sure he's going to deliver. He is in the nets working hard, he will come good. It's a part of being a professional and knowing your craft. Sometimes there'll be good surfaces, sometimes bad. We tell the guys it's not about going aggressive every time but also about adaptability. It's important not to have tunnel vision and play one dimensional cricket," said Morne Morkel in the pre-match press conference.
Abhishek has had trouble against both pace and spin and has not yet opened his account in his first ICC event. While disciplined off-spin bowling proved his undoing in matches against Pakistan and the Netherlands, he was bowled by a fast bowler in India's match against the USA, forcing the young opener to search for his first runs on the big stage.
The Indian cricket team will be going against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, on February 22 (Sunday). This will be the first Super 8 match for both teams and both of them would be eager to get a winning start to their road to semi-finals. The Men in Blue and Proteas topped their respective Groups and are currently unbeaten in the mega tournament. They were also the finalists of the 2024 edition of the marquee competition, which India won under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.
