The investigation into the alleged murder of Pune realtor Ketan Agrawal has revealed what police describe as a carefully planned conspiracy involving prime accused Siya Goyal and her boyfriend Chetan Chaudhary.
According to police, Goyal used a pre-decided signal moments before Agrawal was allegedly pushed off a cliff at Lohagad Fort on June 18. Investigators also said Chaudhary travelled to the fort on a scooter instead of a car to avoid being traced through toll plaza records and even changed his appearance during the operation to avoid suspicion.
Goyal (20) and Chaudhary (22) have been arrested for allegedly conspiring to kill 25-year-old Agrawal by pushing him off a cliff at the historic fort in Pune district.
"The two had decided that she would sit down either to drink water or on the pretext of tying her shoelaces. Sitting down was the signal," the official said. Police said the signal had another purpose apart from informing Chaudhary that the moment had arrived.
Investigators said the plan was designed to ensure Goyal was not standing close to Agrawal when he was pushed. "The signal was chosen deliberately so that Goyal would not be within the victim's reach during the fatal push. They feared that if Chetan pushed Ketan and the latter tried to grab Siya while falling, she too could fall into the gorge. The plan was made keeping her safety in mind," the official said.
According to police, Chaudhary returned to Pune on the same scooter after allegedly carrying out the crime.
Officials said the exercise was aimed at reconstructing the June 18 incident and verifying the statements given by the accused.
Police further claimed that both Goyal and Chaudhary admitted they had earlier visited the fort to identify a suitable location for the alleged murder and had even rehearsed the plan. "We are yet to ascertain which other spot they had practised at," the official said.
The police custody of both accused is set to end on Monday, following which they will be produced before a court. Investigators are expected to seek an extension of their custody to continue the probe.
Meanwhile, police on Saturday questioned Goyal's father, mother and brother for several hours and recorded their statements as part of the ongoing investigation. The allegations and police claims remain part of an ongoing investigation, and the court is yet to determine the guilt or innocence of the accused.
