Pune:Weeks after allegedly conspiring together to kill Ketan Agrawal, accused Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary are now turning on each other, each blaming the other for delivering the final, fatal push at Lohagad Fort, according to police sources.
Investigators say Ketan's death on 18 June was not a single, sudden act, but the fourth attempt on his life, the culmination of a conspiracy that had alreadyfailed three timesbefore. The first attempt was allegedly made on 31 May, when Siya took Ketan to the fort, intending to push him from a deserted point and pass it off as an accidental fall during a trek. According to police sources, Siya later told investigators she choseLohagad specifically because the isolated spotmade it easy to disguise a fatal fall as a trekking accident, exploiting Ketan's own love for trekking as the lure.
A third attempt followed on 14 June, whenSiya again took Ketan to the fort, but the push failed after he got caught in a bush. When confronted, she allegedly claimed she had pushed him because she'd spotted a snake.
It was this third failure, sources say, that pushed Chetan past his limit. He is alleged to have told Siya: "Ab naya plan 18 tareekh ka hai...Ketan ko main maarunga, tumse nahi ho payega" (the new plan is for the 18th... I'll kill Ketan, you won't be able to do it). For the first three attempts, Chetan had reportedly stayed away from the fort altogether; for 18 June, he decided to go to Lohagad himself for the first time and carry out the murder personally.
Now in custody, the two accused are reportedly contradicting each other over who delivered the actual push: Chetan's version, sources say, points to Siya, while Siya has told police it was Chetan. Despite the disagreement over the final act, both have allegedly admitted to the conspiracy and the murder itself, and neither has expressed any regret when questioned, according to police sources.
Investigators believe the timing of 18 June may not have been arbitrary either. Sources say Chetan was opposed to Siya travelling with Ketan to Mahabaleshwar on 19 June for her birthday celebration, and that the murder date may have been chosen specifically to ensure that trip never happened.
