New Delhi:On a routine school morning, an elderly woman and her six-year-old granddaughter set out in an e-rickshaw from their home in West Delhi’s Janakpuri. Minutes later, the child was lying on the road, soaked in blood, while her grandmother begged strangers for help that never came.
The accident took place on the morning of February 17, when a speeding car rammed into the e-rickshaw near the Janakpuri Fire Station, causing it to topple. The grandmother and the child were thrown onto the road.
During treatment, the child was declared dead at Max Hospital, Dwarka. Her postmortem was later conducted at DDU Hospital.
Mercy Xavier, the girl’s maternal grandmother, recalled the moments after the crash with pain and disbelief.
"The rickshaw driver was driving very gently. Suddenly, a speeding white car collided with our rickshaw, and the three of us fell. I begged the car driver to take my baby to the hospital in his car. But he ran away," she said.
Mercy said she made desperate pleas for help as vehicles passed by, but no one stopped.
The child’s mother later said she received a call from a hospital staff member informing her about the accident and her mother’s repeated attempts to seek help on the road.
"She stopped three to four vehicles and asked for help, but no one stopped," the mother said.
It was eventually a nurse, along with another person, who helped rush the injured child to the hospital.
"If help had come sooner, maybe things would have been different," the mother said, adding that the car was speeding.
