Delhi:Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday made a light-hearted remark about Delhi’s traffic after arriving a few minutes late for a joint session with UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy at the British High Commission in New Delhi.
Addressing the audience, Sunak joked about the limitations of artificial intelligence when it comes to real-life problems like traffic congestion in the national capital.
"AI can do many things, as we’ve heard this week, but it can’t yet fix Delhi’s traffic," commented the former PM.
Apologising for the delay, Sunak said, "Sorry, we're a few minutes late, that's entirely my fault. AI can do many things, as we've heard this week, but it can't yet fix Delhi's traffic. So, work to do," which drew laughter from those present at the event.
The session was held as part of the ongoing India AI Summit, where global leaders, policymakers and technology experts have gathered to discuss developments and challenges related to artificial intelligence.
The AI Impact Summit led to major traffic disruptions across Delhi on Thursday, affecting daily commuters. Several routes were diverted due to VIP movement and heightened security arrangements, causing long delays for motorists.
Heavy traffic was reported in many parts of the national capital throughout the day.
Traffic snarls were reported from Sunehri Bagh, Sansad Marg, Prithviraj Road, Indraprastha Park flyover and routes leading to the airport. Many commuters claimed they were stuck in traffic for hours due to movement restrictions linked to VIP security.
Several commuters took to social media to vent their frustration. One commuter claimed he had been stuck in traffic for nearly four hours and feared he would not be able to reach home on time. Another noted that even the widest roads in the national capital were "choked" due to diversions and security measures.
"Crazy gridlock of traffic in central Delhi. Stuck for more than an hour. Due to the VVIP movement, our movement gets restricted. Nobody cares for normal people who are working hard every day," a commuter said.
