Donald Trump said he will order federal agencies to begin the process of identifying and releasing government files linked to extraterrestrial life and unidentified aerial phenomena. In a post on Truth Social, the former president stated that the directive would be issued to the Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, and other relevant departments. He said the move was in response to what he described as “tremendous interest” in the subject of alien and UFO disclosures.
The announcement centres on government records concerning unidentified flying objects, also known as UFOs, and what officials now term unidentified aerial phenomena. Trump said the files relate to “highly complex, but extremely interesting and important” matters. He did not provide a timeline for when the Alien Files release would begin or what specific documents may be declassified.
The statement follows recent comments involving former President Barack Obama, who addressed questions about extraterrestrial life during a podcast interview. Obama said he had seen no evidence during his presidency that extraterrestrials had made contact with Earth. He also clarified in a subsequent social media post that while the statistical odds of life beyond Earth may be high, he found no proof of visits to Earth.
Trump earlier accused Obama of disclosing classified information when speaking about aliens, though he offered no evidence to support the claim. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said Obama had taken information “out of classified” channels. Obama’s office did not immediately respond to the accusation.
The Pentagon has previously examined reports of unidentified aerial phenomena. Senior military officials stated in 2022 that investigations had uncovered no evidence suggesting alien visitation. A 2024 Pentagon report similarly concluded that most sightings were attributable to misidentified objects or ordinary phenomena.
It remains unclear what material might be included in any Alien Files release ordered by Donald Trump. Past disclosures have largely focused on military sightings, radar anomalies and unexplained aerial objects. None of those investigations have produced verified evidence of extraterrestrial technology.
Area 51, a classified Air Force facility in Nevada long associated with UFO speculation, was acknowledged by the CIA in 2013 as a testing site for spy planes. Official archives did not confirm claims involving alien bodies or spacecraft. Despite that, public fascination with UFOs and extraterrestrial life continues to fuel calls for transparency.
The White House said it had nothing further to add beyond Trump’s comments. As of now, there has been no formal announcement outlining the scope, review process or classification standards for any potential file release. Whether this directive results in new disclosures or reiterates prior findings remains to be seen.
