A 62-year-old Hindu trader was hacked to death by unidentified assailants inside his shop in Trishal upazila of Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district, police said Tuesday, in the latest incident raising concerns over the safety of minority communities. The killing took place late Monday night at the Bogar Bazar intersection, according to Trishal Police Station chief Muhammad Firoz Hossain, who was quoted by local news outlet bdnews24.com. The victim was identified as Susen Chandra Sarkar, the owner of Bhai Bhai Enterprise and a resident of Southkanda village.

Police said the attackers entered Sarkar’s shop and struck him repeatedly with a sharp weapon. After the assault, they left him inside the premises and pulled down the shop’s shutters. Sarkar’s family later began searching for him when he did not return home.

“When family members opened the shop, they found him lying inside, covered in blood,” Hossain said. Sarkar was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Sarkar’s son, Sujan Sarkar, said the family had no known disputes or enmity. “We have been running a rice business for a long time. We did not have any conflict with anyone,” he said. He alleged that the attackers looted the shop after killing his father, stealing several hundred thousand taka.

Sujan Sarkar demanded swift action from authorities, calling for the identification and punishment of those responsible for the killing.

The murder has heightened fears among members of Bangladesh’s Hindu community, who have reported a series of violent incidents in recent months. Tensions have been particularly high since the killing of radical youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi in December.

Last month, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council warned that communal violence was rising as the country moves closer to national elections. The council said it documented 51 incidents of communal violence in December 2025 alone.

Bangladesh is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections on Feb. 12, the first since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was removed from office following widespread protests in August 2024.

According to the 2022 census, Hindus number about 13.13 million in Bangladesh, making up roughly 7.95% of the country’s population.
