Bengaluru, the primary IT hub of India, is facing asuicidesurge, with reports indicating that one life is lost to suicide approximately every three and a half hours. Over the past four years, the city has recorded 9,450 suicides, translating to an average of two thousand deaths annually. Furthermore, data from the Home Department reveals that the trend remains alarmingly consistent, with six to seven individuals taking their lives each day.

In 2022, Bengaluru recorded 2,370 suicides, a slight decrease from 2,313 in 2023. However, the numbers rose again to 2,403 in 2024. As of November 2025, the city has already reported 2,364 suicides, indicating that the total is likely to remain above the 2,300 mark, Bangalore Mirror reported.

There are several reasons causing the surge, including family conflicts, financial stress, debts, and unemployment.

The most common method of suicide is hanging, accounting for over 86% of cases and 8148 deaths, followed by poison consumption and jumping from heights. Poison consumption led to 740 deaths, while 204 people in Bengaluru died after jumping from a building or other elevated structures.

Other methods include jumping on railway tracks and the use of firearms.

According to Bangalore Mirror, experts have attributed this surge to various psychosocial stressors, including mental health issues, family conflicts, financial strain, and unemployment.

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) reports that nearly one-third of those who die by suicide have been diagnosed with mental illnesses. The remaining two-thirds often face overwhelming pressures from financial difficulties, relationship breakdowns, and emotional distress.

In response to the rising suicide rates, NIMHANS has established the Tele Manas helpline, available at 14416, which provides immediate counselling and referral support for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts.

As Bengaluru grapples with this crisis, it is vital for communities to engage in conversations about mental health and the importance of seeking help.
