A routine day in Ahmedabad's Rakhial area turned tragic on Monday (June 22) when a speeding SUV allegedly went out of control after its driver suffered a sudden seizure, killing a young woman and injuring six others.
According to police, 40-year-old Mayankkumar Dipakbhai Patel was driving a Tata Harrier with his wife and son when he reportedly suffered a medical episode while descending the Ajit Mill Bridge towards Garibnagar Crossroads. Investigators said Patel lost control of the vehicle, triggering a chain of collisions on the busy stretch.
The SUV finally came to a halt after crashing into a roadside shop, ending the chaos that took happened within seconds.
A woman riding an Activa scooter died on the spot, while six injured persons were rushed to Civil Hospital for treatment. The SUV driver was also admitted to the hospital and is currently not in a condition to record a formal statement, police said.
Investigators have registered a case and launched a detailed probe. Preliminary findings point to the driver's sudden seizure as the cause of the crash, though police said all angles are being examined.
Officials also noted that traffic improvement work is underway near the Garibnagar junction, and additional safety measures, including speed breakers, are being considered following the fatal accident.
