Zimbabwe confirmed their status as the first-placed team in Group B after beating Sri Lanka at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Thursday (February 19) to cause a second major upset of the tournament in the 2026 T20 World Cup after earlier beating Australia and playing a key role in knocking the 2021 champions out of the tournament in the group stage. This means that the African nation will enter the Super eight stage as one of the four unbeaten teams in the tournament alongside India, the West Indies, and South Africa.
Why Are All Groups Toppers Playing Each Other In Super 8 Of 2026 T20 World Cup?
While one would expect the Super 8 to have two group winners and two runners-up clubbed with each other in both groups, that is not the case in the 2026 T20 World Cup. All first-place teams are in Group 1, while all four teams that finished second are in Group 2 in the second round of the tournament.
As it turned out, seven of the eight pre-seeded teams qualified for the second round. Australia were the only team to miss out, and Zimbabwe came into Group 1 in place of them.
The reason behind the pre-seeding is to ensure that the major teams are aware of their venues, which makes it easier for fans to book tickets, as well as ensures marquee matches are broadcast on prime time, while making the logistics for the organisers easier
The pre-seeding has also ensured that co-hosts India and Sri Lanka will play all their games at home.
