The US government has finally answered why it ordered Anthropic to suspend access to its latest powerful AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, around the world. According to Reuters, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has disclosed that the action was taken because the officials feature the AI systems could be used by military or intelligence agencies in Russia, China and other countries considered security risks.
Lutnick reportedly said that US officials were worried because they suspected howAnthopic’s AI modelscould be used in ways that might threaten American national security. The Commerce Department instructed Anthropic to stop providing the models to foreign users while the government reviewed the risks.
This move has sparked discussions between the US officials and Anthropic. Senior technical staff from the AI startup met Commerce Department representatives in Washington on Monday to find a solution that may allow the models to return online while addressing government concerns.
Reportedly, the Commerce Department cited powers granted under the 2018 Export Control Reform Act to justify the restrictions. According to export control experts, this is the first known case in which officials have been used to limit access to advanced AI models. Moreover, the department warned that any violation of the restrictions could eventually lead to civil or criminal penalties.
Notably, the restrictions have also drawn strong criticism from the cybersecurity experts. Over 80 experts signed an open letter urging the Trump administration to reverse the decision.
Leaders from tech firms like Adobe and Nvidia have reportedly supported Anthropic’s position, suggesting that limiting access to advanced AI could harm innovation and cybersecurity research.
The Anthropic case could become a landmark moment in the global debate overAI regulation. If the US government continues using export-control powers to restrict advanced AI systems, other countries may adopt similar measures. It is noteworthy to consider that the outcome of the negotiations could influence how future AI models are developed, distributed, and regulated around the world.
