In a moment that is going viral on social media, Pakistan's Defence Minister on Tuesday alleged that “Delhi and Kabul are waging a proxy war against Pakistan.” His statement soon gained traction online, with netizens reacting strongly. While some joked that “fear could be seen in his eyes,” others laughed at him for making statements without any evidence.
In an interview with France 24, he said, “So now they are actually, what I said was, and I reiterate, that they are now waging a proxy war against Pakistan. Delhi and Kabul and all these outfits and terrorism outfits in Kabul, they are on the same page.”
When the interviewer asked him, “Meaning Delhi is telling Kabul to strike Pakistan? I mean, do you have evidence of that? Those are very serious allegations,” he replied, “It is a serious allegation because it is having serious consequences for us. They will not accept it. How can you expect them to accept it? They will keep denying it. But they enjoy very good relations with Kabul and now we are facing a proxy war and we will, Inshallah.”
The interview clip soon went viral on social media and sparked humorous reactions online. One user wrote, “Fear in the eyes of Khawaja Asif.” Another user remarked humorously, “Ye kehna chahta hai ki ‘India aage se le raha hai aur Afghanistan pichhe se.’” Another quipped, “Looks like we are going to have a sandwich party.”
Others criticised him for speaking “nonsense without any evidence.” One user wrote, “‘Good relations’ is not proof of a ‘proxy war.’ Serious accusations need real evidence, not stories. This sounds more like excuses than facts.” Another commented, “Who accepted what? Who said what? All without freaking evidence, lol.''
In the interview, Khawaja Asif was further asked, “Are you talking to India at all since this?”
He replied, “At the moment, we have no contact with them, direct or indirect, absolutely not. We approached friendly countries that tried to mediate between Pakistan and Afghanistan, between Islamabad and Kabul. I have been part of three or four such meetings, I think in Istanbul and Doha, and even in Kabul, I went to Kabul as well. But these attempts did not really produce any results.”
