At least 31 people have died after a bus plunged into a ravine while travelling towards a capital city. The bus crashed in the northern Amhara region of Ethiopia, while travelling from Dessie to the capital Addis Ababa.
33 people are believed to be injured after the bus veered off the road and plunged into a ravine, according to the Kombolcha Town Administration Police Division. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
The victims are being treated in Dessie and Kombolcha hospitals. The road where the accident occurred winds through hilly terrain and is widely known as hazardous.
A similar bus crash into a river in Ethiopia’s southern Sidama region in December 2024 left 66 people dead. According to the Amhara Regional State Communication Bureau, the vehicle fell into a ravine from a height of about 100 meters following the crash.
Authorities at the scene said efforts were underway to take survivors to nearby hospitals for treatment.
