A Bangladeshi student activist, wanted in his country for the killing of a Hindu police officer last year, was arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi and later deported, official sources said on Thursday. Immigration officers stopped Ahmed Raza Hasan Mehdi while he was trying to board a flight to a European country. Authorities detained him and later sent him back to Bangladesh. Mehdi, who comes from Habiganj in Bangladesh, faces charges over the murder of Sub-Inspector Santosh Chowdhury. The incident took place on 5 August 2024 during violent unrest in the country.

On that day, large protests broke out across Bangladesh. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country as violence spread. Reports said there were several cases of arson and looting in different areas, reported news agency PTI.

A purported video had earlier gone viral in which Mehdi claimed responsibility for killing the police officer, reported NDTV.

Sub-Inspector Santosh Chowdhury died during an attack on the Baniachang police station in Habiganj. Protesters had organised a march after reports of deaths in other places. As the crowd approached the police station, police opened fire, and six people died. Angry villagers then surrounded the station and set it on fire. Several officers became trapped inside. Reports say the mob lynched Chowdhury and burned him alive. His body was later found hanging from a tree, as per media reports.

Chowdhury had married less than a year before the violence. Three months after his death, his wife gave birth to a son. He was his parents’ only child.

Meanwhile, the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has described attacks on Hindus as isolated incidents and denied that the violence is communal. However, reports show that attacks on minorities, including Hindus, their temples and their businesses, have increased since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.
