Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday introduced a new framework called the 'MANAV Vision' for artificial intelligence (AI) while speaking at a global AI summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The vision focuses on building AI systems that are responsible, inclusive and beneficial for society.

According to PM Modi, the wordMANAVrepresents key principles that should guide the development and use of artificial intelligence.

M – Moral and ethical systems: AI should be built and used in a way that follows ethical values.

A – Accountable governance: There must be clear rules and responsibility in how AI is developed and deployed.

N – National sovereignty: Countries should have control over their own data and AI infrastructure.

A – Accessible and inclusive: AI should be available to everyone and help bridge digital gaps.

V – Valid and legitimate AI systems must be reliable, trustworthy and lawful.

During his address, Modi stressed that artificial intelligence should not remain limited to a few nations or companies. He said AI must be made open and accessible so it can benefit more people, especially in developing countries.

"AI is making machines intelligent, but more than that, it is increasing human capabilities manyfold. There is only one difference: this time the speed is unprecedented and the scale is also unexpected. Earlier, the impact of technology used to take decades to be visible. Today, the journey from machine learning to learning machines is faster, deeper and wider than ever," Modi said.

Modi added that while some parts of the world are cautious or worried about AI, India views the technology as an opportunity for growth, innovation and public good. He said the goal should be to use AI as a tool for empowerment and wider inclusion, particularly for countries in the Global South.
