The US Department of Defense has deployed additional naval and air defence assets to the region, including the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Gerald R. Ford, alongside guided missile destroyers and a nuclear-powered submarine. According to US officials cited by NBC News, the deployments are intended to provide President Donald Trump with military options should diplomacy with Iran fail.

This significant US military buildup in the Middle East has triggered not only strategic calculations in Washington and Tehran, but also a wave of viral internet theories predicting imminent war.

At the same time, indirect talks in Geneva between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US representatives have shown limited progress. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said “there was some progress made” but acknowledged “there are still a lot of details to discuss.” Despite ongoing diplomacy, online speculation has surged.

One viral theory, dubbed the “World War 68” theory, claims major conflicts share a numerical pattern when adding digits of their start dates. Supporters of the theory note:

From this pattern, online users speculate a US–Iran war could begin on 20 February 2026, since 2+20+20+26 also equals 68. The arithmetic, however, relies on selective formatting and arbitrary digit grouping. Analysts point out that such numerological frameworks can be constructed to fit numerous historical events if date segmentation is adjusted accordingly. Security experts emphasise that there is no empirical correlation between arithmetic coincidence and geopolitical decision-making.

Parallel to the numerology trend, anonymous posts on 4chan have claimed the US and Israel are preparing a coordinated strike on Iran’s leadership. One widely circulated post alleged that a “secret council” of Iranian leaders would be targeted within a 36-hour timeline. The post further claimed Israel would employ tactical nuclear weapons in the opening wave.

However, there is no evidence supporting these assertions. US officials have not indicated any decision to launch military action. A senior administration official told NBC News that no final decision has been made as the US awaits a written response from Tehran addressing outstanding nuclear and missile-related concerns.

Intelligence experts caution that anonymous online platforms are frequently exploited for disinformation, psychological operations, or speculative panic.

The US naval posture in the region is nonetheless significant. When the USS Gerald R. Ford reaches the Mediterranean, it will join the USS Abraham Lincoln’s carrier strike group operating near the Persian Gulf. According to US Naval Institute tracking data, additional assets in theatre include littoral combat ships and guided missile destroyers near the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly 20 per cent of global oil shipments. Iranian officials have repeatedly warned that they would block the strait if attacked.
