In what analysts are describing as the largest US military deployment near Iran since the Iraq War, Washington has assembled an armada of naval vessels, fighter jets, bombers and air-defence systems across the Middle East, as tensions with Iran continue to spike amid stalled nuclear negotiations. The buildup has escalated significantly over the past few weeks, with key combat elements being moved closer to Iran, and all its strategic approaches, including the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
At the heart of the deployment are two aircraft carrier strike groups (CSGs), which are rarely seen outside full-scale conflict. The first is led by the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is already operating in the region with its escorting warships. These destroyers are equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles and advanced air-defence capabilities. The Licoln's carrier wing includes F-35C stealth jets, F/A-18 Super Hornets and electronic warfare aircraft, meaning that Washington's strike aircraft are within reach of dozens of potential targets across Iran.
Lincoln has been joined by the USS Gerald R Ford strike group, which is the US Navy's most advanced aircraft carrier. Ford, which was redirected from the Caribbean towards the Middle East, can carry more than 75 aircraft, significantly boosting US' naval aviation capacity.
Defence analysts note that this concentration of force represents one of the most formidable US naval force postures in the region in decades.
The naval buildup is complemented by major reinforcement in the air. The US has moved more than 50 fighter jets including F-22 Raptors, F-35 stealth fighters and F-16 Fighting Falcons towards bases across the Middle East. Independent flight-tracking data shows these aircraft are en route or already deployed to strategic airfields in Jordan, the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Apart from jets, the deployment also includes aerial refueling tankers, which are vital for extended missions, as well as reconnaissance and early-warning aircraft such as AWACS systems, that enhance situational awareness and coordintation across vast distances.
To support the Navy and the Air Force, the US has also deployed advanced Patriot and THAAD air-defence batteries to the region. These systems are designed to shield US troops and bases from short- and mid-range missile threats. Reports indicate that long-range B-2 bombers have also been placed on alert, ready to move in if ordered. While these bombers remain stationed in the US, their heightened readiness shows the seriousness of the operation.
The US military footprint spans several key locations:
Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea -The US has deployed the Lincoln and Ford carrier groups across these crucial waterways near Iran's southern coast, that will help US maintain freedom of navigation in waters critical to global energy flow.
Regional Airbases:Fighters and support aircraft are positioned in states such as Jordan and Gulf partners.
