At Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan, a small Japanese macaque named Punch quietly became one of the internet’s most emotional viral stories.
Once described online as the “lonely monkey,” Punch won hearts across the world after videos showed him clinging tightly to a plush orangutan he seemed unwilling to let go of, as he was abandoned by his mother at birth. For many viewers, the images were heartbreaking. For Punch, the toy was survival.
Now, months later, the seven-month-old macaque has taken his first real step toward belonging, he has begun bonding with another monkey.
Punch was born on July 26, 2025, weighing just 500 grams. According to Japan’s national daily Mainichi Shimbun, his mother, a first-time parent, did not care for him after birth. Zookeepers say maternal abandonment can sometimes occur among inexperienced monkeys.
Although healthy, Punch was vulnerable. Caretakers Kosuke Shikano and Shumpei Miyakoshi stepped in to hand-raise him, carefully balancing human support with exposure to the sounds and scents of other macaques. Their goal was not just to keep him alive, but to eventually reintegrate him into the troop.
In the wild, infant macaques cling constantly to their mother’s fur. The contact provides warmth, emotional security, and even physical development. Without that bond, young monkeys can experience stress and social difficulties.
To compensate, caretakers tried substitutes, rolled towels and soft toys, until Punch formed a strong attachment to an orangutan plush toy. Its textured fur allowed him to grip it easily, and it became his constant companion.
Zookeepers described the toy as a kind of “surrogate mother,” especially at night when staff were not present. Soon, videos of Punch sleeping while tightly hugging the plush toy began circulating online, deeply moving viewers.
Punch’s story gained momentum after visitors began sharing photos and clips on social media. When Ichikawa City Zoo posted about him on its official X account in early February, the response was overwhelming.
A hashtag translating to #HangInTherePunch quickly spread, generating tens of thousands of posts. Many users admitted they felt emotional watching the tiny macaque navigate life while clutching his toy.
