The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an "Extremely Severe Alert" for several districts in Uttar Pradesh, warning of powerful thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, lightning and hailstorms over the next few hours.
According to the government alert, severe thunderstorms with wind speeds of 70-90 kmph, gusting up to 100 kmph or more, are likely to hit parts of Agra, Aligarh, Baghpat, Bijnor, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Hathras, Mathura, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur and Shamli within the next three hours.
The weather warning comes as Uttar Pradesh continues to recover from a series of destructive storms, heavy rains and lightning strikes that have already caused widespread damage across the state.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday reviewed the situation and expressed grief over the loss of lives, livestock and property caused by the recent extreme weather events.
According to official figures, the storms and lightning strikes have claimed 111 lives and injured 72 people across 26 districts of the state.
The Chief Minister extended condolences to the families of those who died and directed officials to speed up relief and compensation efforts.
During a high-level review meeting, Yogi Adityanath instructed district administrations to complete the assessment of human casualties, livestock losses and property damage within 24 hours.
He also directed officials to ensure that compensation is provided to affected families without delay.
The recent weather events were driven by active western disturbances and cyclonic circulations, resulting in violent dust storms, heavy rainfall and lightning strikes.
Wind speeds during the storms reportedly ranged from 74 kmph to 130 kmph, causing significant damage to homes, power infrastructure and public property.
