The Sands Point Garden Club partnered with the Village of Sands Point to celebrate Arbor Day this year with a community tree-planting event at Village Hall, bringing together local officials, volunteers and children to promote environmental stewardship.

Mayor Peter Forman, members of the garden club and the village arborist led children from Sands Point families in planting tree saplings on the grounds of the village’s new water facility on Tibbits Lane. Garden club members helped the children select trees and worked alongside village staff during the planting process.

After planting the saplings, participating children received packets of wildflower seeds to take home and plant in their own gardens.

Organizers said the event provided a meaningful way for residents to observe Arbor Day while spending time outdoors and contributing to the community’s landscape.

Forman said the village’s environmental efforts extend beyond beautification.

“We are committed to the environment and committed to protecting small wildlife by providing a place to nest, escape from predators, shelter from the sun and otherwise inhabit,” he said.

The event also highlighted the village’s ongoing commitment to urban forestry. Sands Point continues to renew its Tree City USA designation through the Arbor Day Foundation, a recognition awarded to communities that demonstrate a commitment to effective urban forest management.

Garden Club members said the Arbor Day program was well-received by families and offered children a hands-on opportunity to learn about the importance of trees and environmental conservation.
