Children from across the greater Sayville area spread messages of kindness throughout the community during “P.S. I Love You Day” on Feb. 13.
Young people let their neighbors know they are loved and not alone through uplifting messages written on cards and coffee cup sleeves, which were handed out to customers at businesses around Sayville, along with celebrations at their individual schools.
Students from Lincoln Avenue Elementary School celebrated the day by creating a paper link chain displayed at the school’s entrance, with a positive message written on each link by a student.
Students from Lincoln Avenue Elementary School’s Student Council also partnered with the Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce to create about 500 cards with similar, well-designed messages of support, which were distributed at over a dozen businesses in town.
“We just try to spread that message of positivity and that you’re not alone,” said Lincoln Avenue Elementary School teacher and student council advisor, Gina LoCurto.
LoCurto co-chaired the initiative with fellow teacher Jennifer Order and with the support of Lincoln Avenue Elementary School principal Dominic Armano.
Business owners and shoppers alike were grinning from ear to ear as they handed out and received cards with special messages of love and designs, such as a smiling heart holding heart-shaped balloons.
Over a dozen businesses partnered with Sayville Schools and the Sayville Chamber, and according to Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce president emeritus/administrator Eileen Tyznar, even more businesses are excited to receive cards next year.
“TheSayville Chamber was very excited to be contacted by the Sayville School District teachers to work together to come up with an idea to get the P.S. I Love You positive-affirmation cards with drawings distributed to people somehow,” Tyznar said. “We came up with the idea of incorporating the shops and businesses on Main Street who are more than enthused to hand them out to their customers, staple them to receipts, or put them in their bags with their purchases. It’s nice to have the positive vibes from the students!”
Cherry Avenue Elementary School students marked the day by designing the sleeves for warm drinks sold at the Sayville Bean Coffee House, featuring plenty of pink and purple hearts and messages like “Smile Bright! You are loved!” for the third year in a row.
