A Sri Lankan expat working at a call centre in Dubai found his life taking an unexpected turn after a routine gold purchase landed him a luxury car worth more than 50 times his investment.
Sumith spent Dh15,000 (around ₹3.7 lakh) on a gold biscuit at the Dubai Gold District and walked away with a gold Mercedes after his raffle coupon was picked, according to a report by Khaleej Times.
He said the scale of the win still feels surreal. “I got returns over 50 times my investment. I am still digesting the news," he was quoted as saying by Khaleej Times.
The UAE resident of two decades had bought the gold biscuit as an investment during his first visit to the Dubai Gold District. Under a “Spend and Win" campaign, shoppers received one raffle entry for every Dh500 spent.
With a purchase of Dh15,000, Sumith received 30 coupons — but it took just one to change his fortunes. His name was drawn as the headline winner of the district’s Shop & Win campaign, which ran from December to early February.
Sumith recalled seeing the car at the market and posing for a photo with it, never imagining it would one day be his. “I never thought I would ever win it. But when I saw the car, I just loved it. Somewhere, I had a small feeling I might win something," he said, according to Khaleej Times.

Days later, after finishing a night shift, he returned home and went to sleep — only to be woken by a call that would change everything. “I was sleeping when they called me… They told me to check my email. When I saw the message, I thanked God," he said.
Despite suggestions from well-wishers to sell the vehicle, Sumith said he plans to keep it. “I will drive the car. I am not going to sell it for now. This is special for me," he said.
After 20 years of living and working in the UAE, he described the moment as a blessing and something he never imagined possible.
