A magnitude 6.4 earthquake has struck off the coast of Cuba, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at 23:30 local time on Monday and was centred about 118km west-northwest of Mantua, in western Cuba.
The USGS said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 33 km. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Jolts of the earthquake were also felt throughout Southwest Florida, though no significant impacts or damage have been reported at this time.
While Florida is not known for frequent earthquakes, seismic activity in Cuba and the Caribbean can occasionally be felt across South Florida due to the region's proximity to several active fault zones. These powerful fault systems can transmit low-frequency seismic waves through the Earth's crust and across surrounding waters, allowing tremors to travel long distances before gradually weakening.
Authorities are monitoring the situation, and further assessments are expected as information becomes available.
This comes hours after an offshore earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 hit the southern Philippines, killing at least 35 people and injuring more than 200 others mostly in ruined buildings and sending a 1-metre tsunami into nearby coasts. Several mostly low-rise buildings collapsed or sustained heavy damage in the hard-hit city of General Santos. Tsunami damage was reported in at least one southern coastal village. Smaller waves were measured in Indonesia and Palau, and as far away as southern Japan.
The quake also triggered a landslide in Glan, a municipality in the province of Sarangani, that killed 13 villagers, Rene Punzalan, a provincial disaster-mitigation official, told the DZBB radio network. Four other villagers died in Sarangani, he said.
