A celebrated former Disney Channel star nearly lost her sight and her life in an accident that has since reshaped her perspective on survival and vulnerability.

In early February 2025, former Disney Channel actor and podcaster Christy Carlson Romano wasaccidentally shot in the facewhile participating in a clay pigeon shooting activity with her husband, Brendan Rooney, marking one of the most harrowing and unexpected turns in her life to date.

Christy Carlson Romano, 41, was celebrating her husband's birthday on 07 February 2025 when the accident occurred at what was meant to be a routine outdoor sporting outing. According to Romano's own account on theNot a Damn Chance!podcast, the incident was not deliberate or malicious but the result of another party at the shooting range discharging their firearm unsafely.

'It's a birdshot that got sprayed in my direction by another party, and essentially it was within 200 feet,' Romano explained during her first detailed recounting of the incident, stressing that 'they weren't malicious. It wasn't aggravated assault. It's what happened.'

The birdshot pellets struck her multiple times, including at least one shot that embedded itself behind her right eye and another in her forehead. Romano revealed that one fragment remains lodged just 1 mm from permanently blinding her. Had the angle been different, she said, the consequences could have been irreversible blindness or even death.

Romano's immediate reaction to the injury was shock and disbelief. 'I'm shocked and what goes through my head immediately is, 'Oh, that's dope, I just got shot,' she said, recalling a surreal, out-of-body sensation. Moments later, fear set in: 'Oh now I'm gonna die.'

Her husband, Rooney, was quick to act. Witnessing Romano's initial lack of audible distress, he immediately checked her condition and rushed her to a hospital, a move Romano later credited with helping prevent worse outcomes.

At the hospital, medical professionals determined that surgical removal of the shot fragments posed greater risk than leaving them in place. According to Romano's own Instagram and later interviews, the piece behind her eye could not be safely extracted without risking serious further injury.

Despite the severity of the injury, Romano retained her vision and survived without critical damage. 'If my head would've been tilted in any other direction, I would have been blind in my right eye,' she said, emphasising how close she came to permanent impairment or death.

In the weeks following the accident, Romano shared updates on social media, describing both physical recovery and emotional upheaval. She spoke of profound gratitude and a shift in outlook, saying that the experience profoundly changed her view of life and her priorities.
