PresidentDonald Trumpis moving significant U.S. military power toward the Middle East, with theUSS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, now sailing from the Atlantic toward the region. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and its strike group left the Caribbean Sea on Tuesday and are heading for the Strait of Gibraltar, the gateway to the Mediterranean. Once there, the Ford will join the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group already operating in the Middle East.
The deployment marks the most substantial show of force yet amid stalled high-level negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program and the government’s recent violent crackdown on domestic protests.
The buildup gives the U.S. the ability to launch airstrikes far into Iranian territory while also protecting American troops and allies across the region.
The USS Gerald R. Ford’s arrival in the region, combined with the additional fighters and destroyers, represents the largest U.S. military buildup in the Middle East under the current administration so far.
