A 22-year-old Sikh nurse was left with a broken nose after being brutally attacked in a racial assault at a gym in Geelong, Melbourne, on Tuesday night.

Harmanpreet Singh told media that he was confronted by three men while training inside a gym in Corio at around 11 pm. The men verbally abused him, but the ordeal continued outside the gym.

As he left, the trio was waiting for him. “They called me an ‘Indian dog’ and told me to go back to where I came from," Harmanpreet told Australian news outlet,9News.

One of the men then banged his head on Harmanpreet’s nose, causing it to break and bleed heavily. “He got really close to my face and then just got really back and hit his head on my nose," he added. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the assault.

Locals took Harmanpreet to hospital, where he is expected to undergo surgery. Speaking to9News, he said he was still traumatised by the attack and the racial abuse. “Nobody wants to hear it. Especially when you’re just minding your own business," he said.

This was not the first time Harmanpreet has been subjected to racial abuse in Australia, but the latest incident has left a significant emotional impact. His sister, Khushi Kaur, said the family was deeply shaken by the attack.

“I try to keep myself strong, not care about such things, but it hurts," Harmanpreet said. “I don’t know if I am going to go back to the gym… I am not going to feel safe after this."
