United States PresidentDonald Trump has signalled a possible breakthrough in negotiations with Iran, suggesting a deal could be reached as early as this weekend while asserting that the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz would reopen immediately upon an agreement. However, mixed signals from Tehran and ongoing regional tensions continue to cast uncertainty over a possible US-Iran deal.
The talks between the US and Iran are going "very well". "It might not happen, you know? Who knows," Trump remarked regarding a potential pact, before adding, "But if it happens, it could happen over the weekend."
He further noted, "Anything can happen when you're dealing with Iran."
On the issue of the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said that it would open immediately "upon signing" a memorandum of understanding with Iran. "It will open quickly... We've already had our mine sweepers there."
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, is a major trade route through which one-fifth of the world's total oil flowed before the US-Israel-Iran war began on February 28.
Earlier on Monday, Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social, "Talks are continuing, at a rapid pace, with the Islamic Republic of Iran."
Trump also wrote on Truth Social that he had spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and representatives from Hezbollah. Trump said that no troops would go to Beirut.
As of latest, Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to implement a ceasefire following US-led negotiations in Washington. The agreement aims to end months of fighting in Lebanon and lays the groundwork for further negotiations toward a broader peace and security arrangement between Israel, Lebanon and Iran.
