ROME — On the Spanish Steps and surrounding plazas, the World Taekwondo Performance Team and Italy’s Ciao peformace team turned athletic skill into a public spectacle, offering measured previews of the week’s competitions.
Thousands gathered as athletes executed precise kicks, broke boards and performed synchronized patterns, demonstrating the speed and control that will be on display at the upcoming events. The demonstrations, staged Thursday at the Spanish Steps and nearby Piazza di Spagna, aimed to build interest ahead of the World Para Taekwondo Grand Prix on Thursday and the World Taekwondo Grand Prix, scheduled for Friday to Sunday at Foro Italico.

Ciao Team, the Italian Taekwondo Federation’s freestyle demonstration squad, added an extra layer of showmanship with acrobatic, highly choreographed routines that blurred the line between competition and performance. Their sequences, designed as much for spectacle as for precision, helped draw in passersby who might otherwise have overlooked the sport.
Locals and tourists alike paused to watch, drawn by the contrast between Rome’s calm settings and the athletes’ controlled intensity. The performances follow previous public exhibitions by the World Taekwondo team at the Spanish Steps and in St. Peter’s Square, and underscore the sport’s growing public presence.

This year’s showcases coincide with the Italian Taekwondo Federation’s 60th anniversary, which will be celebrated at the grand prix closing ceremony on Sunday. The demonstrations served as a concise reminder that the competitions to come will blend technical rigor with spectacle.
