The US House of Representatives has passed a war powers resolution aimed at reasserting Congress's authority over the conflict withIran, marking the first time the chamber has taken such a step since the war crossed a critical legal threshold.

The resolution passed 215 to 208 on Wednesday, with four Republicans crossing party lines to join all Democrats in support. The Republicans who broke with their party were Tom Barrett of Michigan, Warren Davidson of Ohio, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Thomas Massie of Kentucky. The remaining 208 Republicans voted against the measure, staying firmly behind the president.

The White House has argued that the 90-day clock was paused when a ceasefire took effect, though both sides have continued launching strikes even during that ceasefire, including earlier this week.

Representative Brian Mast of Florida, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, was even more direct, calling it a "stupid political vote" that would only weaken the president's hand while negotiations with Iran were still ongoing.

The vote is therefore largely symbolic, a blow to Trump rather than an actual constraint on his military authority.
