Google’s project to release genetically modifiedWolbachia mosquitoesin Florida and Calfornia was announced in late May 2026. It’s an initiative of Google’s parent company,Alphabet, through its life sciences division Verily.
“Verilyhas filed for EPA approval to release millions of specially treated mosquitoes over the next two years as part of an effort to reduce disease-carrying mosquito populations.
The initiative is known as theDebug Project, a program that has been researching mosquito control for more than a decade”
The premises as well as the narrative of the Verily initativeare similar to those put forth by Bill Gates andThe World Mosquito Program (WMP).

This might sound the beginnings of a Hollywood writer’s horror film plot.

… Anotice from the federal registershows the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is reviewing Google’s request to release up to 16 million mosquitoes annually, in Florida and California, over the span of two years. The EPA will decide whether to greenlight Google’s request foran experimental use permit after a public comment period, which ends on 5 June. (The Guardian)
