Questions over who was responsible for the strike that damaged Kuwait International Airport have become the latest flashpoint in the ongoing conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel, with Tehran and Washington offering sharply different accounts of what happened.
The attackoccurred on Wednesday when what Kuwaiti authorities described as "a number of hostile drones" struck a passenger building at Kuwait International Airport. The strikekilled one person, an Indian national, and wounded 63 others, including passengers and airport workers. The airport had reopened only days earlier after a months-long closure caused by the war that began on February 28.
While US officials have directly blamed Iran for the attack, Iranian authorities have denied targeting the airport's passenger terminal.
Iran has disputed the allegation that it targeted the airport terminal. According to IRNA News Agency, a spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said: "The IRGC's Aerospace Force did not fire any missiles toward Kuwait's passenger terminal."
The spokesperson further claimed that the damage was caused by a malfunctioning US-made Patriot missile system, state media reported.
The IRGC acknowledgedtargetingthe headquarters of the US Navy's 5th Fleet and American military facilities elsewhere in the Gulf region, but did not identify Kuwait as a target.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) strongly rejected Iranian claims that the damage was caused by a US interceptor missile.
In a statement posted on social media, CENTCOM said: "CLAIM: Iran claimed today that it did not attack the passenger terminal at Kuwait International Airport and damage was instead caused by a US missile interceptor. Totally FALSE."
The statement added: "TRUTH: Iran struck the civilian airport with drones in a deliberate, calculated, and unjustified attack."
Kuwait's Defense Ministry said it intercepted and destroyed more than a dozen missiles and a similar number of drones launched from Iran. The US military also said two Iranian missiles broke apart before reaching Kuwait and that American forces shot down multiple drones targeting US personnel in the country.
