India's first T20I squad since the 2026 T20 World Cup victory will be announced soon, with the selectors set to name the squad for the tour of the United Kingdom (UK), where the team will play back-to-back T20I series against Ireland (2 matches) and England (5 matches). A new captain could be in place with World Cup-winning skipper Suryakumar's spot in danger after a prolonged run of poor form with the bat.

With Suryakumar likely to be shown the exit door, this will open up a middle-order spot, which should make room for Shreyas Iyer's comeback. The Indian ODI team vice-captain has not played a T20I for the Men in Blue since December 2023. Although he earned a recall to the side for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand at home in January after an injury to Tilak Varma, he did not get a chance to play a single match under Suryakumar's leadership.

One would largely expect that the core of the Indian team that won the 2026 T20 World Cup will be retained. Pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj could be rested, with the focus on ODI and Test cricket for them. Moreover, Harshit Rana is yet to regain fitness. Hence, Prince Yadav could get a maiden T20I call-up after securing a place in the ODI side for the home series against Afghanistan following his incredible display in ODI cricket. Prasidh Krishna could also get a place in the T20I after nearly three years.

Hardik Pandya's place could also come under concern as he is dealing with fitness issues. His selection in the ODI team for the Afghanistan series is also subject to a condition. With preparations for the 2027 World Cup in full swing, India could prioritize him to play the three-match ODI series. This could open up a spot for Nitish Kumar Reddy. The possibility of both being included, like in 50-over cricket, cannot be dismissed.

Elsewhere, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has broken the door, and while it remains to be seen how India fits him in the playing XI, a place in the squad for the 15-year-old is a no-brainer choice. He could become India's youngest cricketer in history during this tour. With Tilak Varma taking up the finisher's spot in the T20 World Cup, Rinku Singh's place could be under the scanner.

With Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, and Axar Patel in the ranks, India are unlikely to need a fourth spin bowling option in the UK, and it will be a surprise if Washington Sundar makes the cut.

The big call remains on who will captain the team. As things stand, Shreyas, alongside Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan, are considered in contention. A decision is expected soon on that front and could be announced alongside the squad.

India will face Ireland on June 26 and 28 in Belfast before travelling to England for five games between July 1 to 11.
