A Valley Stream man was indicted on Tuesday, June 2, on charges ofstabbing his uncle’s girlfriend and a coworker to death in two separate attacks just hours apart in May, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly announced.
Rony Yahir Alvarenga-Rivera was arraigned on three counts of murder, Donnelly said. He pleaded not guilty and, if convicted, faces up to life in prison without parole.
On May 1, the Nassau County Police Department received a 911 call for a woman stabbed at a Wendy’s restaurant located on Austin Boulevard in Island Park, and when officers arrived at the scene, they found 42-year-old Ana Maria Del Aguila-Cordova on the ground near the dumpsters behind the restaurant, having suffered more than 30 stab wounds, Donnelly said. She was pronounced dead at the scene, the DA said.
Later that night, police received a 911 call from an employee inside a 7-Eleven convenience store in Lynbrook, where they found Alvarenga-Rivera with cuts on his hands and blood on his clothing, Donnelly said.
Information gathered at the convenience store alerted police to a potential second victim at Alvarenga-Rivera’s home on West Mineola Avenue in Valley Stream, where officers found Eddy Raquel Hernandez Castillo lying near the side entrance of the home with more than 50 stab wounds, Donnelly said. Castillo was pronounced dead at the scene, the DA said.
Hernandez Castillo was the girlfriend of Alvarenga-Rivera’s uncle and they had been living together above Alvarenga-Rivera in the same home for the last six months, Donnelly said.
On April 30, Alvarenga-Rivera was in his basement bedroom when he allegedly became agitated by the sound of the victim walking around upstairs in high heels, leading him to confront Castillo and allegedly attack her, and stab her more than 50 times, killing her, Donnelly said.
Alvarenga-Rivera then boarded a Long Island Railroad train to Wendy’s in Island Park, where he worked with Aguila-Cordova, and waited for her near the dumpsters, anticipating her to take out the trash, the DA said.
Three hours after the first attack, as Aguila-Cordova entered the dumpster area behind the restaurant, Alvarenga-Rivera allegedly attacked and killed her, Donnelly said. The investigation revealed that Alvarenga-Rivera previously had a series of arguments with Aguila-Cordova while working together, the DA said.
Police recovered the knives allegedly used in the attacks and two cell phones at the Wendy’s in Island Park and arrested Alvarenga-Rivera, Donnelly said.
