Ahmedabad:Five days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared in a public meeting that every illegal infiltrator would be identified and deported from the country, Gujarat Police launched a massive statewide operation against suspected illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

In Ahmedabad alone, police and Crime Branch teams detained 290 suspicious individuals during an overnight search operation conducted across multiple parts of the city. After verification, 166 people were confirmed to be Bangladeshi nationals, including 41 men, 95 women, and 30 children.

According to preliminary questioning, investigators found that many of them were earning livelihoods in Ahmedabad and allegedly sending money back to Bangladesh through Angadia networks routed via Kolkata. Officials also suspect that some funds were transferred through mobile applications and digital channels.

The joint operation involving the Crime Branch, SOG, and local police was carried out in areas including Chandola, Gulabnagar, Danilimda, Vatva, Ramol, Odhav, Nikol, and Naroda. Police sources said that after previous crackdowns in the Chandola area, many suspected illegal immigrants had dispersed across the city and were allegedly living under altered identities in rented houses, slum settlements, worker accommodations, hotels, and commercial establishments.

Several spa centres in also came under scrutiny after police received inputs that foreign women were working there and that their identity documents required verification. During the operation, one spa operator allegedly fled before police arrived, while some women reportedly attempted to escape through windows.

Authorities are now examining the detainees' documents, entry routes into India, local connections, and financial transactions. Officials have indicated that legal action will be taken against individuals found to be residing illegally, as well as anyone accused of facilitating or sheltering them.
