Salim Khan has been on a ventilator since yesterday, after he suffered a minimal brain haemorrhage yesterday and underwent a medical procedure at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital, Dr Jalil Parkar, who is treating him, said in a health bulletin.
On Tuesday, Dr. Parkar said that the veteran screenwriter was "stable" but "under close observation" in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). “There was minimal brain haemorrhage. A procedure called DSA was done this morning. No surgery was required. He is still on a ventilator. Hopefully, by tomorrow, he will be off the ventilator. Keeping in mind the age, the time of recovery is longer,” Dr. Parkar told the media.
"He's fine, he's stable... All in all, he's doing quite well," he added.
Dr. Parkar said 90-year-old Khan, father of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, had very “high” blood pressure levels when he was admitted to the hospital yesterday and was also experiencing some "jerks".
Also known as a brain bleed, an intracranial hemorrhage is a type of stroke that causes bleeding in your head. As your brain is not able to store oxygen, it relies on a series of blood vessels that supply it with oxygen and nutrients. When a brain bleed occurs, a blood vessel leaks blood or bursts. Blood collects or pools within your skull and brain. This causes pressure against your brain, which prevents oxygen and nutrients from reaching your brain tissues and cells.
Brain bleeds are common after falls or traumatic injuries. They are also common in people with unmanaged high blood pressure.
A hemorrhage is a life-threatening medical emergency, as it only takes three to four minutes for your brain cells to die if they don’t receive enough oxygen. Treating a brain bleed quickly leads to the best outcome.
Doctors say hemorrhages can be life-threatening and cause permanent brain damage. The severity and outcome of a brain bleed depend on its cause, location inside your skull, size of the bleed, and the amount of time that passes between the bleed and treatment.
Once brain cells die, they cannot come back, and damage can be severe, resulting in physical, mental, and task-based disability.
