New Delhi:Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US PresidentDonald Trumpare likely to come face-to-face later this month at the G7 Summit in France, setting the stage for a closely watched diplomatic encounter amid efforts by New Delhi andWashingtonto navigate a complex phase in bilateral ties.
The summit, scheduled to be held in Évian-les-Bains from June 15 to 17, will bring together leaders of the world's leading economies, along with invited partner countries such as India. While a formal bilateral meeting between Modi and Trump has not been announced, both leaders are expected to attend the gathering, raising the possibility of an interaction on the sidelines.
Any meeting between the two would carry added significance as Modi and Trump have not met in person since the Prime Minister's visit to Washington in February 2025, shortly after Trump's return to the White House. Since then, India-US relations have faced strains over several issues, including trade disagreements, India's continued purchase of Russian oil and Trump's repeated claims that he helped end last year's India-Pakistan conflict.
However, recent diplomatic engagements suggest both sides are looking to steady the relationship. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to India last month was seen as an important step in that direction, with Rubio extending an invitation from Trump for Modi to visit the United States. India has not publicly indicated whether the Prime Minister has accepted the invitation.
The backdrop to a potential Modi-Trump interaction is particularly important. India and the United States are currently engaged in another round of negotiations aimed at finalising a long-pending bilateral trade agreement, while strategic cooperation in areas such as technology, supply chains and regional security remains high on the agenda.
Beyond Washington, Modi is also expected to hold a series of bilateral meetings with other world leaders attending the summit, including French President Emmanuel Macron, the host of this year's G7 gathering. The summit itself is taking place amid heightened geopolitical tensions, debates over tariffs, developments in West Asia and concerns about global economic uncertainty.
Although India is not a member of the G7, Modi has been a regular invitee to outreach sessions in recent years, reflecting the country's growing influence in global economic and strategic affairs. The Prime Minister is also expected to travel to Florida later this year for the G20 Summit, ensuring that India remains actively engaged in key multilateral forums.
With trade negotiations underway and both countries seeking to manage differences while expanding cooperation, any interaction between Modi and Trump in France is likely to attract significant diplomatic attention.
