Russialaunched 73 missiles and 656 drones acrossUkraineovernight in one of the largest aerial assaults of the war, killing at least 22 civilians and injuring 138 others, Ukrainian officials said Tuesday.
The barrage targeted multiple regions, including the capital Kyiv and the central city of Dnipro, with explosions echoing across the country into the early morning hours. Ukrainian authorities said residential neighborhoods, energy facilities and civilian infrastructure were among the sites hit.
The deadliest strikes occurred in Dnipro, where rescue workers recovered the bodies of a 3-year-old child, a woman and her 8-year-old son from the rubble of damaged buildings. Officials reported 16 deaths in the city, while six people were killed in Kyiv.
According to Ukraine's Air Force, air defenses intercepted or suppressed 40 missiles and 602 drones, but dozens of projectiles still reached their targets. Damage was reported in at least 38 locations nationwide, with debris from intercepted drones falling in several areas.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks and renewed calls for additional Western military support, warning that continued shortages of advanced air defense systems leave civilians vulnerable to Russian missile strikes.In Kyiv, at least 81 people were wounded. Residents described spending the night in shelters, hallways and bathrooms as blasts shook apartment blocks and shattered windows across the city.
Russia's Defense Ministry said the operation targeted military-industrial facilities in several Ukrainian regions. Ukrainian officials, however, said the strikes caused significant damage to homes, civilian infrastructure and energy networks.
The latest assault marks a further escalation in Moscow's aerial campaign as the war enters its fifth year. The attack comes amid stalled diplomatic efforts and continued fighting along the front lines, with both sides intensifying long-range strikes.
Authorities in Dnipro declared a day of mourning for the victims as rescue crews continued searching damaged buildings for survivors and assessing the full extent of the destruction.
