Israeli strikes continued in Lebanon on Tuesday despite US President Donald Trump saying both Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to halt hostilities. The latest attack came after Trump said he had spoken with both sides and secured commitments that "all shooting will stop" amid concerns that escalating military action in Lebanon could jeopardise talks to end the US-Israeli war with Iran and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
The Lebanese Embassy in Washington said Hezbollah had accepted aUS proposalcalling for a "mutual cessation of attacks", which would also prevent Israeli strikes on Beirut.
However, fighting appeared to continue on the ground.
Lebanon's Civil Defence said six people were killed in an Israeli strike on Monday night in the southern village of Marwaniyeh. It was not immediately clear when the attack had taken place. The agency also said one of its centres in Nabatieh had been subjected to "direct targeting as a result of a hostile Israeli airstrike", causing damage to the building and equipment.
Later, the Lebanese army reported that two soldiers were wounded after what it described as an Israeli drone strike in Nabatieh.
The Israeli military toldNBC Newsit had carried out at least one strike in the area but said it was targeting Hezbollah infrastructure.
Earlier, the military said it had intercepted at least two projectiles fired from Lebanon into Israeli territory overnight. No injuries were reported.
Hours later, it said air raid sirens had sounded in northern Israel after a "suspicious aerial target" was detected in an area where Israeli troops were operating in southern Lebanon.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, said: "There will be no Troops going to Beirut, and any Troops that are on their way, have already been turned back.” He added that he had a "very good call with Hezbollah, and they agreed that all shooting will stop — That Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel."
The talks were the first a US President had, either directly or through intermediaries, with Hezbollah, which is designated a terrorist organisation by the United States.
