Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday accused former Assam party president Bhupen Kumar Borah of leaking confidential details of the party’s meeting to a journalist linked to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Gogoi’s accusations came as Borah is set to officially join the BJP on February 22. The development took place after Bhupen Borah submitted his resignation to the Congress and blamed Gogoi’s “highhandedness" for his decision.

“We always wondered how confidential details of our meeting were leaked to a particular journalist linked to Himanta Biswa Sarma," Gogoi said, adding, “We tried our best not to believe these rumours and speculation, but it’s true."

The Congress MP further hit out at Borah over his decision to join the BJP just a day after submitting his resignation. “Bhupen Borah has no qualms about joining the BJP and surrendering to Himanta Biswa Sarma. Why, within a day of resignation, did you join Sarma?" he questioned.

Leading the Congress party into crisis ahead of the Assembly polls in Assam, former state unit chief Bhupen Kumar Borah submitted his resignation on Monday, blaming Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s “highhandedness" for his decision.

In his letter, Borah said he was being ignored by the party leadership and was not given his due in the state unit. He said he had informed the high command about how the party was functioning in the state and that the situation had affected his self-esteem and dignity.

“I sent my resignation to the Congress High Command at 8 am this morning and explained in detail why I was compelled to take this stand. This is not a personal decision. I have given 32 years to the party and joined it in 1994. This principle is not merely personal; it is driven by concern for the party’s future. That is why I conveyed everything in detail to the Congress High Command," Borah said, after he submitted his resignation.
