YouTube experienced a widespread outage on Tuesday, disrupting access for users across multiple countries, including the United States and India. Users reported videos failing to load, homepage feeds disappearing and persistent “Something went wrong” messages on both the mobile app and desktop website.

Outage tracking platform Downdetector recorded a sharp surge in complaints worldwide. At the peak of the disruption, more than 320,000 users in the United States flagged issues. In India, reports crossed 19,000 within minutes during morning hours, indicating the outage was global rather than localised.

Google acknowledged the issue through a public update from TeamYouTube. In a statement, the company said an issue with its recommendations system prevented videos from appearing across multiple surfaces — including the homepage, the YouTube app, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids.

The company later confirmed that the homepage had been restored, but added that engineers were still working toward a complete fix. Some users also reported disruptions on YouTube TV, suggesting a broader backend issue.

According to Google’s update, the root cause was tied to YouTube’s recommendations system. This system powers the homepage feed, suggested videos and personalised content across platforms. When it malfunctioned, users were left with blank screens or error messages even though the service itself had not entirely crashed.

Because YouTube’s architecture is highly interconnected, a failure in one system can cascade across multiple services.

While the outage was largely platform-side, users can try the following steps if the issue persists:

• Force-close the YouTube app and reopen it

• Restart your phone, tablet or computer

• Check internet stability — switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data
