I still remember back in the old 20thcentury, when we could hardly wait for thatbrave new worldin the future, when robots would be a part of our societies.

But now that the day has come, things feel very different.

Case in point: during the Lunar New Year, China has shown to the world a new generation of robots performing kung fu.

It’s a display of its technological might to impress and frighten the West – because these droids are not being developed to dance – they are tomorrow’s deadly foes.

While at this point in time they still don’t look particularly invincible, we’d do well to remember that just a year ago, they could hardly walk straight – and now this.

If we extrapolate this rate of progress for say, another 5 years, we may have a big problem in our hands.

This aired tonight to 1 billion people in China. A year ago these robots could barely wave a handkerchief, now they can do backflips and kung fu with nunchucks. Physical intelligence is the next frontier.pic.twitter.com/xFasDuGgRx

“Two dozen humanoids performed martial arts, parkour and breakdancing in what the Chinese embassy in Washington called a demonstration of “precision, power, and perfect balance”.

The display was broadcast on state television during China’s Spring Festival Gala, the Lunar New Year’s Eve show that is the country’s biggest TV event of the year and seen as a plank of Beijing’s propaganda efforts for its citizens and the rest of the world.”
