What exactly happened inside the hostel building of the IndianMaritime Universitycampus in Navi Mumbai before dawn on Thursday remains a mystery that has left students shaken and parents demanding answers. The blood-stained body of 19-year-old cadet trainee Somnath Singh was discovered below the hostel building at the university’s Nerul campus around 5 am, triggering panic across the institute. The first-year cadet trainee was found lying near the building under circumstances that police say are still unclear.
Campus authorities and security staff rushed to the spot after the body was noticed and immediately informed the police. A team from the NRI Police Station later arrived and took custody of the body for further investigation.

What has intensified the mystery is that investigators are still unable to determine whether the teenager died by suicide, accidentally fell from the third floor, or whether another factor may have been involved.
Police have registered an accidental death case for now and are awaiting the post-mortem report to establish the exact cause of death.
The incident has now sparked wider concerns over hostel safety at the maritime institute. Several parents alleged that the hostel’s large sliding windows lacked proper safety grills and claimed that requests for stronger safety measures had been raised earlier as well.
Students and parents gathered at the campus after the incident and demanded immediate improvements in security arrangements, installation of protective window grills, and better emergency medical facilities inside the hostel premises.
Police said all possible angles are being examined, and further action will depend on forensic findings and the post-mortem report.
