The Supreme Court upheld the order passed by the Delhi High Court on May 22, 2026. Vinesh Phogat has been cleared to participate in the Asian Games trials scheduled to be held on May 30-31.

After issuing the order, the Supreme Court issued a notice to Vinesh Phogat, Centre, Indian Olympic Association, and then posted the matter for a further hearing on Monday, June 1.

Vinesh Phogat attempted a comeback to wrestling after reversing her retirement, which she had announced following the Paris 2024 Olympics heartbreak. She attempted to compete at a ranking event in Gonda earlier this month, but the WFI barred her from taking part. This was because the federation claimed that anti-doping rules prohibited her from competing in any event till June 26, 2026. However, Phogat claimed that the International Testing Agency (ITA) had granted her permission to compete from January 1, 2026.

For those unversed, the rules state that a player returning to competition after a break must serve a mandatory six-month notice period.

Vinesh Phogat then moved to the Delhi High Court over the matter, which in turn criticised the WFI's actions and claimed that the wrestling body's decision was not in the best interest of the sport. The court held that the governing body's ban on Phogat was exclusionary.

“The appellant shall be permitted to participate in the selection trials for the Asian Games, 2026, which are scheduled for 30.05.2026 and 31.05.2026. The policy and the circular are clearly exclusionary in nature as they do not give any discretion to Respondent No.1 (WFI) to consider iconic players like the appellant in view of the sabbatical taken on account of her maternity leave,” the court said in its order, which was uploaded on Saturday, May 23.

After that, the WFI challenged the decision in the Supreme Court.
