The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday sought five days of police custody of former judge Giribala Singh and sought a five-day extension of police custody for her son Samarth Singh in the high-profile Twisha Sharma death case, as the Bhopal court reserved its order on the plea. The development comes a day after the CBI arrested Giribala Singh, Twisha Sharma’s mother-in-law, following the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s decision to quash her anticipatory bail.

According to officials, the agency told the court that custodial interrogation of both accused was necessary to piece together the events surrounding the 33-year-old former model-actor’s death and to examine allegations of dowry harassment, cruelty and possible destruction of evidence.

Twisha Sharma was found hanging at her marital home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. The case triggered nationwide outrage after her family alleged sustained harassment and raised questions over the initial investigation, especially because her husband Samarth Singh is a practising lawyer and Giribala Singh is a retired judicial officer.

The Supreme Court later transferred the probe to the CBI, citing concerns over “institutional bias” and the need for an independent investigation.

Investigators have since intensified the probe. Samarth Singh, who was earlier arrested by the state SIT from Jabalpur, was handed over to the CBI earlier this week. The agency subsequently recreated the crime scene at the Bhopal residence and carried out detailed videography and forensic examination.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court, while cancelling Giribala Singh’s anticipatory bail, cited WhatsApp chats, injury marks on Twisha’s body and allegations of harassment as significant factors warranting custodial interrogation.

Sources said the CBI has also been examining claims related to dowry demands, alleged attempts to malign Twisha Sharma’s character, and possible tampering with evidence.

On Thursday, the agency questioned Giribala Singh for over seven hours before formally arresting her.

The Bhopal court has now reserved its order on the CBI’s plea seeking seven-day police custody of both accused.
